There are numerous complications that can occur due to decompensation and regular hospitalisation is the norm. Apart from the very poor health-related quality of life of patients with this condition, the burden on healthcare systems is extremely high.
Studies have shown that up to 50% of these hospitalisations are preventable but it requires constant monitoring of the patient and timely interventions before acute care becomes necessary. The ongoing COVID-19 situation has exacerbated the situation, with patients unwilling or unable to present in person.
CirrhoCare® is a novel, multi-modal monitoring system designed specifically for managing decompensated cirrhosis patients in a non-clinical setting. CirrhoCare® algorithms assimilate data from multiple home-monitored, sensed and patient personalised variables, and use this for assisted early diagnosis of cirrhosis complications – e.g. hepatic encephalopathy and ascites. CirrhoCare® utilises a smartphone app that collates the patient’s vital metrics for transmission on to the CyberLiver platform for analysis.
CirrhoCare® also acts as bi-directional communication system between hepatologists and their patients, helping to ensure compliance and engagement.
The patient effectively receives specialist care on a continual basis, regardless of location or proximity to specialised liver care centres.
The patient’s status is presented in real-time to clinicians via a dashboard, raising alerts whenever algorithms analysing the various metrics indicate the onset or worsening of specific complications.
